Brand Drift
7 signs your brand is becoming inconsistent
Brand drift rarely announces itself. It creeps in through everyday work, and by the time it is visible in the market, it has usually been building internally for years. These are the seven signs we encounter most often in our audit work — if more than two feel familiar, your brand is already drifting.
1. Multiple versions of your logo are in circulation. Someone has a stretched one, someone has an old one, someone has a screenshot with a white box around it. In the audits we run, it is entirely normal to recover five or six logo variants in active use — from current staff, not archives. If you cannot say with certainty which file is correct, neither can anyone else.
2. Every presentation looks like it came from a different company. Fonts change, colours wander, layouts collide. Sales decks are the most-seen documents you produce, and usually the least controlled — we have written about the sales presentation problem separately because it is that common. 3. Your colours are “close enough”. Orange becomes red-ish, deep green becomes teal. If nobody knows the exact values — or where to find them — each supplier picks their own.
4. Regional offices or departments have developed their own look. A sub-brand nobody approved is a fork of your identity. 5. New materials start from old materials. When templates do not exist or are hard to find, people copy the last thing that shipped, inheriting every deviation it contained. 6. Suppliers keep asking for “the latest logo”. That question means your assets are scattered, and every request gets answered slightly differently.
7. You notice things in the wild you did not approve. A social post in the wrong tone, a banner in the wrong font, a vehicle wrap in the wrong shade. If it surprises you, your controls have already failed — you are just seeing it late.
None of these signs means your team is careless. They mean your brand has outgrown the informal controls that used to protect it. The first step to regaining control is knowing exactly how far things have drifted — measured, not guessed. Book a Druff brand audit and get a scored picture of where your brand actually stands.
